MG: five times more sales in 2021 than in 2020

  • MG ZS EV best sold electric vehicle in Sweden
  • First time: over 5.000 vehicles sold in one month in Europe
MG achieved a sales record in the first half of 2021. Despite the pandemic, it sold almost five times as many vehicles in mainland Europe this year, compared to the same period last year.

Whilst the total numbers by international standards are still modest, MG Motor Europe’s CEO, Matt Lei, is very proud of the sales figures that were achieved in continental Europe: 7.103 units in the first half year of 2021 compared to 1.431 units in the first six months of 2020.

In June, 2.358 units were sold. Combined with the MG UK sales figures (2.832 in June and 13.592 from January to June), MG sold no less than 5.190 units in mainland Europe and a total of 20.695 vehicles in the first half year of 2021. That is a new sales record for MG Motor Europe.

“We have started a journey in Europe with a new brand from a new manufacturer. We are now twenty months on our way. It’s very good to see that our products are already greeted with so much enthusiasm in Europe”, says Matt Lei.

MG made an impact with its European sales in the full year of 2020 with 7.155 units. As the 100% electric MG ZS EV passed its first full year of sales – in The Netherlands (since October 2019), Norway (since February 2020), Iceland and Denmark (both starting in April) – the brand not only realized great sales results, but also reached top 10 positions.

For example, in Norway, the MG ZS EV was the number 8 best-selling car overall and the 7th best-selling electric car with a 4.85% market share in the BEV market (Battery Electric Vehicle). In Belgium, the MG ZS EV was named Family Car of the Year.

In 2021, MG did things even better. The brand was introduced in Austria, France and Germany. MG also entered Italy, Spain and Sweden a few months ago, with an immediate sales record in June for the MG ZS EV as best sold electric vehicle. Besides that, MG launched a new model for mainland Europe in addition to the MG ZS EV: the MG EHS Plug-in Hybrid. So far, MG has already sold 2.324 units of the EHS Plug-in Hybrid.

Another great accomplishment is the fact that MG is now on sale in sixteen European markets. More than 200 MG Brandstores and services point are now in use in Europe and the brand expects to have 400 MG Brandstores operational by the end of the year.

The MG family will grow furthermore. The brand announced that it will further expand its portfolio in the second half of 2021 with several other all-new all-electric models. The MG Marvel R Electric – a all-new generation C-SUV – is expected in the European MG Brandstores by the end of September 2021. MG then eagerly awaits the new MG5 Electric by the end of this year, the world’s first all-electric station wagon.

Matt Lei: “MG will rapidly expend its model range. In 2022, we can expect even more electric models. In the end, we think five or six new models will suit our needs. Our goal is to disrupt the EV market in Europe with stunning designed vehicles that have an outstanding quality and finish, and plenty of advanced technology for a fair price.
